On the move

February 1, 1999

Let the baby proofing begin!  Julia is on the move crawling around everywhere.  We've spent the last month childproofing the kitchen cabinets, the bathroom and hiding all exposed cords and electrical outlets.  Julia started to crawl and is very curious about everything in her surroundings.  Although she seems to have developed quite a strong bond with me, we are trying to strike a balance and I have told my husband he needs to participate more in feedings and playing with Julia when he comes home from work.  Julia is still bottle feeding but we introduced some solid foods a few months ago which she seems to like.  My husband likes to pretend the feeding spoon is an airplane and Julia laughs when he feeds her.

Julia sometimes gets fussy when we are home together and I have to run upstairs to change the laundry.  I don't always feel like lugging her up and down the stairs.  When I leave the room I can hear her fussing and crying almost acting a bit confused as to when she will see me again.  Based on everything I have read, this seems to be a normal stage in development as I believe Julia has yet to reach the stage where she has established object permanence with me and other objects she values.  When I leave the room, Julia believes I am never to return because she cannot see me.  When I come back from upstairs, she stops fussing immediately and we go back to play time on her activity mat and building blocks.

Over the holidays Julia was quite the social butterfly.  We hosted a large holiday gathering for Christmas and Julia loved being the center of attention.  She laughed and smiled as our relatives passed her from person to person.  Now that she is almost 8 months old, Julia has become a bit more weary of new people she meets.  She seems to have developed a small amount of stranger anxiety.  Now she much prefers to be held by me then my neighbor Silvia who loves to stop over and say hello to Julia.  Hopefully as the weather gets warmer this spring we can take more walks to visit Silvia and Julia will grow to remember her.
